A unique part of Kaguya’s capability was high-defi nition
television (HDTV). We included this on the mission
purely for public outreach and education. With it we
recorded dramatic full-color videos of the lunar landscape
from orbit, including Earth rising and setting over
the Moon’s bleak horizon. Developed by NHK, Japan’s
national broadcasting corporation, the HDTV aboard
Kaguya included two cameras. A wide-angle camera with
a 50° × 30° fi eld of view looked backward along Kaguya’s
orbit, and a telephoto camera captured a 15° × 8.8° fi eld
looking forward. Each had three 2-megapixel CCDs imaging
in red, green, and blue.
